This guide walks through the six domains of the RBT exam, following the 3rd Edition Test Content Outline that took effect January 1, 2026. Read a section, then practice that domain with the linked quiz.
A. Data Collection and Graphing (17%, 13 questions)
- Continuous measurement records every instance: frequency (count), rate (count per time), duration (how long) and latency (time from a cue to the start of the behavior).
- Discontinuous measurement samples behavior: partial-interval (behavior occurred at any point in the interval), whole-interval (throughout the interval) and momentary time sampling (at the instant the interval ends).
- Permanent product recording measures the lasting result of a behavior, such as completed worksheets.
- Graphs show data over time. The x-axis usually shows time (sessions or dates) and the y-axis shows the measure. Look at level, trend and variability.
B. Behavior Assessment (11%, 8 questions)
- Assessment gathers information used to plan treatment. The RBT assists and collects data, and the supervisor interprets results and designs the plan.
- Preference assessments identify items likely to work as reinforcers. Common formats are single-stimulus, paired-choice and multiple-stimulus.
- Indirect assessment uses interviews and questionnaires. Direct assessment uses observation such as ABC data (antecedent, behavior, consequence).
- Functional assessment looks for the function of a behavior, commonly attention, escape, access to tangibles or automatic reinforcement.
C. Behavior Acquisition (25%, 19 questions)
- Reinforcement increases future behavior: positive reinforcement adds something, negative reinforcement removes something aversive. Punishment decreases behavior.
- Prompting helps a learner respond correctly, and prompt fading reduces help over time to avoid prompt dependence. Types include physical, model, gestural, verbal and visual prompts.
- Shaping reinforces successive approximations. Chaining teaches a sequence of steps, using forward, backward or total task presentation.
- Discrete-trial teaching uses a clear cue, response and consequence. Naturalistic teaching builds skills within everyday activities.
- Generalization means a skill appears across people, places and materials. Maintenance means it continues over time.
D. Behavior Reduction (19%, 14 questions)
- The RBT implements the behavior intervention plan written by the supervisor. Do not change it on your own.
- Antecedent strategies prevent problem behavior, for example offering choices or a visual schedule.
- Replacement behaviors serve the same function in an appropriate way, such as teaching a learner to ask for a break.
- Extinction withholds the reinforcer that maintained a behavior. Expect a temporary increase, called an extinction burst.
- Differential reinforcement (DRA, DRI, DRO) reinforces desired behavior while not reinforcing the problem behavior.
- Follow the crisis procedures in the plan, prioritize safety, and report incidents to your supervisor.
E. Documentation and Reporting (13%, 10 questions)
- Session notes should be objective: describe what you saw and did, not opinions or guesses.
- Report concerns, incidents and changes to your supervisor promptly, and follow your employer rules on timing.
- Protect client privacy. Share information only with authorized people and store records securely.
F. Ethics (15%, 11 questions)
- RBTs work under the direction and supervision of a BACB certificant. You do not design programs or work independently.
- Stay within your competence and training, and decline or ask for help with tasks you have not been trained on.
- Keep professional boundaries, avoid dual relationships, and keep client information confidential.
- The BACB Ethics Code for Behavior Technicians sets the standards. Read it directly at bacb.com.
