Skipping Ethics and Documentation and Reporting
These two domains make up 28% of the exam combined, but candidates often focus their study time on the hands-on ABA procedures instead, since they feel more central to the job. Both domains show up on the exam in full proportion regardless.
Memorizing definitions instead of practicing application
Exam questions usually describe a scenario and ask what a technician should do, not “define shaping.” Flashcard definitions are a starting point, not a finish line. Practicing with scenario-based questions matters more.
Studying only your strongest domain
It’s natural to keep practicing what you’re already good at because it feels productive. Track your practice scores by domain, not just overall, and put extra time into whichever domain is consistently weakest.
Test-day mistakes
Mismanaging the 90-minute time limit
85 questions in 90 minutes is roughly a minute per question. Spending several minutes stuck on one question can leave you rushing the last stretch of the exam. If a question isn’t clicking, make your best choice and move on.
Trying to identify the pilot questions
10 of the 85 questions are unscored pilot questions, but you can’t tell which ones they are. Second-guessing which questions “don’t count” wastes time and doesn’t change your strategy. Treat every question as if it’s scored.
Overthinking the passing score
The BACB doesn’t publish a fixed passing percentage; it’s set using the modified Angoff method. Chasing an unofficial “80% to pass” number some sources cite can create unnecessary anxiety. Focus on being solidly prepared across all six domains instead of a specific score target.
Logistics mistakes
Not knowing the retake rules before you need them
If you don’t pass, you can retake the exam, but you must wait at least 7 days between attempts, up to 8 attempts in a 12-month period. There’s no BACB retake fee, but Pearson VUE charges $45 each time. Always verify current fees and rules directly with the BACB, since they can change.
