What is an RBT?

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional certification in behavior analysis. RBTs assist in delivering behavior analysis services and practice under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor and/or an RBT Requirements Coordinator.

How long does it take to become a Registered Behavior Technician?

The timeline can vary, but most candidates complete the process in 1 to 3 months. This includes completing the 40-hour training course, passing a background check, completing the competency assessment with a BCBA, and finally, passing the RBT certification exam.

What is the average salary for an RBT?

The average salary for an RBT in the United States typically ranges from $35,000 to $50,000 per year, or about $17 to $25 per hour. Salaries can vary significantly based on geographic location, years of experience, and the specific employment setting (e.g., clinic, school, in-home).

What are the job prospects for RBTs?

The job outlook for RBTs is extremely strong. The demand for behavior analysis services is rapidly growing, particularly for individuals with autism. According to the BACB, the number of certified RBTs has grown exponentially, indicating a high demand in the field. It's an excellent entry-level position with many opportunities for career advancement.

Do I need a college degree to become an RBT?

No, a college degree is not required to become an RBT. The minimum educational requirement is a high school diploma or its equivalent. You must also be at least 18 years old.

Is the RBT exam hard?

The difficulty of the RBT exam is subjective, but it is a professional certification exam that requires thorough preparation. The passing score is determined by a process called standard setting. Candidates often find it challenging if they have not adequately studied the RBT Task List (2nd ed.) and gained practical experience.

How many questions are on the RBT exam?

The RBT exam consists of 85 multiple-choice questions. However, only 75 of these are scored. The remaining 10 are unscored pilot questions that may be used in future exams.

How long do I have to complete the exam?

Candidates are given 90 minutes to complete the RBT exam.

What is a passing score for the RBT exam?

The BACB does not publish a specific passing score. The score is determined by the total number of questions answered correctly, which is then converted to a scaled score. You will receive a 'Pass' or 'Fail' result.
